Classroom Dynamics:
- smaller teacher-student ratio that allows for each student to have his/her needs uniquely met with specialized support & interventions
- students receive core instruction (Reading/Language Arts, Math, & Writing) within the special education setting through a variety of instructional strategies, such as hands-on activities, paper-pencil tasks, and use of technology
- students have access to general education curriculum standards with supplemental resources and/or alternate curriculum that support rigorous and targeted instruction
- students engage in structured teaching techniques that follow the TEACCH method through 5 basic principles: physical environment, scheduling, work tasks, routine, & visuals
- students have general education inclusion, based on individual academic / social capabilities, such as Science & Social Studies, Physical Education, & Fine Arts
Classroom Schedule:
- students follow the Nichols bell schedule from 8:00am - 3:05pm, with 10 total periods that are 39 minutes each
- students follow an individualized visual or written schedule that clearly provides a stable & predictable school day
- students often receive additional special services, such as Speech-Language Therapy, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, &/or Adapted Physical Education
